SVOD subscriptions in Eastern Europe are on pace to rise by 16 million in the next 5 years, with Russia leading the way, according to a new report from Digital TV Research. Russia will pass Poland, with subscriptions in the country growing by 8.77 million by 2024, with Poland adding 6.32 million.

Those two countries will comprise 58.2% of the total number of SVOD subscriptions in Eastern Europe, which the report, called Eastern Europe OTT TV and Video Forecastsexpects to reach 26.19 million. SVOD revenue in Russia won't surpass Poland's until 2023, however, since SVOD services in Russia generall cost less.

To no one's surprise, Netflix will continue to be the market leader and will boast 8 million subscribers in the 22 Eastern European countries, according to the report. That's twice the number it had in 2018, and will account for 30% of all SVOD subscriptions in the region.

“The imminent launches of both Disney+ and Apple TV+ will further boost the sector," said Simon Murray, principal analyst at Digital TV Research. "We forecast nearly 3 million subscribers for Disney+ by 2024. Apple TV+ will be more modest.

“We believe that Netflix will thrive despite these rival launches. However, we have downgraded our Amazon Prime Video forecasts. There are no Amazon Prime countries in Eastern Europe at present, so all of its subscribers will be directly paying for the platform.”

The full report, which costs £1,000, can be downloaded from Digital TV Research.
